Cricket World Cup 2011 - CWC 2011

It’s again the summer of cricket in the region. The Cricket World Cup 2011 is held in three south Asian countries, India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. This is the third time it has come to the subcontinent after 1987 and 1996. The opening ceremony, yesterday in Bangabandhu Stadium, was a spectacle there wasn't an empty seat in the stadium. From Sri Lanka, three singers were performed, Bathiya, Santhush and Iraj followed by a dance show “Sound of Waves”. Well!! Hope SRI LANKA can WIN this year too!!

Let the games begin from 19^th of February 2011.

Sri Lanka visit 2011

Finally, after 2 years of counting, we have visited our home, our parents, relatives, friends…. Etc. in Sri Lanka. We were there from 29th Jan to 13th Feb 2011. Since we have visited many relatives, the trip was bit tiring though. However, at the end it was a great relief after months of working in the lab without any break. We visited Sri Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic - http://www.daladamaligawa.org/) and the Sacred Jaya Siri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura (http://srimahabodhi.org/). Especially, that was the first time I flew over the country in a day time. It was very nice to explore the country over the clouds and had a nice view of east coastal line from the flight. I will update the snaps into my photo blog soon and do tune into http://tasteofcosmos.blogspot.com/.

Cricket after many years!!

Played cricket after several years with my friends in Singapore, at Chinese garden. This was the first time I played on Singapore soil. It was a neat place to play though the sunlight is too hard. I always remembered how we played during school holidays, and on Sinhalese new year with my friends back in Sri Lanka both cricket and Elle (it's like baseball but the rules are slightly different). I also missed the village stream (lake) to get a fun-filled bath after the cricket sessions.

Pompeii Exhibition in Singapore

The exhibition was held at National Museum of Singapore and we visited the exhibition on Saturday (04122010). It was rich with the frescos, monuments, and some remains found from the excavations at Pompeii.
Pompeii was an ancient city  destroyed by the Vesuvius volcano around 79 CE (a Roman town when it was destroyed). Scientists say it was a huge eruption which could eject the lava and soil around 35 Km into the sky. The Pompeii residents didn't suffer rivers of hot lava first, rather ash raining down from the sky. Afterwards the lava. That's how the architecture, frescos, and the like were safer to see even today and didn't destroyed from the eruption.
In addition, researchers have found some evidences that even before the Pompeii eruption there were some volcanic eruptions.  They found some footsteps on volcanic ash and they believe those were made by a bronze-age person 2000 years before Pompeii.
